1. Cooperative Learning Groups – Reciprocal teaching is important. The teacher should create heterogeneous groups of 3 to 5
students.
2. Identifying Similarities and Differences – The student’s culture can affect classroom behavior. Allow students to share their culture with the class. It takes time to learn a new language. Cooperative grouping and graphic organizers are helpful.
3. Nonlinguistic Representation / Graphic Organizers – Knowledge is stored in linguistic format and imagery format. The more students use both systems of knowledge, the better they can think and recall. Some examples of graphic organizers are a descriptive pattern organizer and a time sequence pattern organizer.
4. Homework and Practice – Homework is necessary and should have appropriate and timely feedback. Research shows that it takes practicing 24 times to reach 80% competency. A guideline for total homework time per night is 10 minutes x grade level.
5. Advanced Organizers – A KWL chart is an example, and it helps students to scaffold their learning. This should help improve levels of understanding and recall.
6. Cues and Questions – Teachers should use higher order thinking questions from Blooms Taxonomy.
